- Refers to an important Buddhist festival commemorating the birth, enlightenment, and death of the Buddha. It is particularly important in Theravada Buddhism. This festival is held on the full moon in the lunar month of Vesakha (falling in April or May). Celebrations include special devotional services and meritorious deeds such as offering food or alms to monks. Captive birds are sometimes released in memory of the Buddha's compassion. This day is observed as a public holiday in many countries in Southeast Asia.
