pine oil
- Scope note
- A colorless or light amber colored, pleasant smelling oil obtained from the steam distillation of wood from the pine species Pinus palustris. It is valued for its low rate of evaporation and used as a retardant for oil paints that dry too rapidly. Pine oil is also used as a preservative, as a solvent for gums, resins, and other substances, for its germicidal properties as a principal constituent of general disinfectants, in odorants, insecticides, detergents, wetting and emulsifying agents, wax preparations, antifoaming agents, in textile scouring, and the flotation process for refining lead and zinc ores.
