Scope note
Material comprising the aromatic leaves of several species of trees in the families Lauraceae or Myrtaceae, used for many purposes by humans. Fillets and other head gear made of bay leaves were used in antiquity and other contexts to indicate honor or status. Bay leaves are used as seasoning in cooking. Bay leaves are used in entomology as the active ingredient in killing jars, where vapors kill insects prior to mounting. Bay leaves are also used in cabinets and other contexts to discourage the growth of molds.
