henequen (fiber)

- A strong yellowish or reddish hard fiber derived from the leaves of the species Agave fourcroydes, a tropical American agave. Similar to sisal, henequen is a coarse, stiff fiber that is used for making ropes, twine, bags, hammocks, and shoe soles. Henequen has been used for coarse fabrics since prehistoric times in Mexico.
