Scope note
Hollow wooden memorial poles that were used by the ancient Yolngu peoples of Central and Eastern Arnhem Land to store the bones of the deceased during mortuary ceremonies. Modern artists produce new larrakitj to educate Indigenous and non-Indigenous people. Larrikitj are often painted with designs and symbols representing clans or relationships.
