- Long, narrow ornamental bands generally with fringe at either end, worn over the left arm near the wrist by priests, deacons, and subdeacons. Originally it was a cloth of fine quality used to wipe away perspiration, or an ornamental handkerchief, generally carried in the hand as an ornament. Ornamental handkerchiefs or cloths of this kind were originally carried by people of rank in ordinary life.
