Scope note
The individual leaves of a book or manuscript numbered on the recto only. The two sides of the folio are typically numbered using 'r' for recto, meaning the front or righ-hand page, and 'v' for verso, meaning the back or left-hand side. Reference to a folio is distinguished from reference to a "page" in that a page is numbered on both sides.
