Metal plates on some sallets and armets, curving down over the skull to the line of the eyebrows and serving as extra protection for the forehead. Early forms first appearing before the middle of the 15th century consisted of a single heavy contoured plate, cusped and pointed, riveted to the skull; in the late 15th century a detachable form made of two plates was introduced and remained in use on German jousting helmets until the mid-16th century.
