Scope note
Buildings that housed places of confinement and labor for those unable to pay debts, common particularly during 17th-19th century in Europe and America. For buildings housing similar institutions intended to provide punishment and reformation of the criminal, use "houses of correction (buildings)." For welfare buildings providing charitable care for low income individuals, use "almshouses (buildings)."
