Maypoles
- Scope note
- Tall poles decorated with flowers and greenery, often painted with stripes, and erected in open spaces for May Day celebrants to dance around. Celebrants often wind ribbons or streamers around the pole in complex patterns. The rite is related to ancient spring fertility dances that began around living trees.
