lasers (optical instruments)
- Scope note
- Devices that generate electromagnetic radiation in the ultraviolet, visible, or infrared spectrum, in the form of a very narrow continuous or intermittent beam. Originally an acronym for "light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation;" the first functional laser was built by Theodore H. Maiman (1927-2007), and demonstrated in 1960. Lasers have multiple applications: they are used as components in information retrieval and transmission devices and systems, cutting, measuring, and medical tools, and as entertainment devices.
