carpet needles
- Scope note
- Hand-held, sharp, and hollow instruments used in the production of wool rugs, wherein the wool passes through a canvas backing to create a tufted surface. These instruments, typically comprising a hollow shank, wooden handle, and needle eye, are used to push woolen fibers through the backing fabric; when the needle is removed, a length of tuft in continuous loops is left on the surface of the backing.
