Specialized hand-held tools designed for use in boating and sailing activities. Historically, these tools comprised a single pointed steel blade mounted on a wooden handle. Sailor's traditionally used these tools to rub light seams, carry out various cutting and chopping tasks, and eat or prepare meals while on board a ship. Modern sailmaker's knives, however, are designed to be increasingly versatile; these tools now often take the form of folding-knifes, equipped with multiple blades and additional tools including shackle openers and marlin spikes, amongst others.
