Scope note
Large but fairly low cupboards with an enclosed storage cabinet above and an open shelf or shelves below, or having two or three shelves and no enclosed cabinet. It is a type made in 16th- and 17th-century England and 17th-century America. Distinct from "press cupboards," which have both the upper and lower sections enclosed.
