Scope note
Short-bladed, slightly curved infantry sabers carried by the soldiers and officers of Napoleon's Imperial Guard. "Briquet" refers to a metal blade flint striker for lighting fires, which resembled this infantry short sword. The term for the sword was made official in an instruction of June 1806 by Napoleon's ministry of war. The two-foot blades were mostly used for utilitarian purposes, but could also inflict serious injuries during battle.
