- Womens' fashion accessories comprising clamps, typically metal and decorative, that were attached to long, trailing skirts to hold them up off the floor; used particularly in the later 19th century. The skirt lifter was often attached to a cord or ribbon that was hung from the waist by a chatelaine. The wearer used the skirt lifter when necessary, such as when walking up stairs or dancing.
