- Lightweight garments intended for women as outerwear, prevalent in 19th century Europe. Originally the name for Regency era spencer jackets made of silk or kerseymere, specifically designed to be worn with an evening gown. These later evolved into shawl- or blouse-like garments with or without sleeves, often with lacework incorporated into the design. Many of these were made from muslin or cambric, but the style of varied in material and form. For cropped jackets from the Regency era worn by both men and women, use "spencer jackets."
