redingotes (overcoats)
- Scope note
- Double- or single-breasted three-quarter length or full-length fitted overcoats with flared skirts, sometimes open in the front to reveal garments underneath, usually with large collars and lapels; worn especially by men and women during the 18th and 19th centuries, originally made with short shoulder cape. For dresses open in front to show an underskirt or with a front gore of contrasting material, use "redingote (dresses)."
