dipinti
- Scope note
- Painted marks on ancient Greek vases, usually found on the foot of the vase. Less common than graffiti, dipinti were typically painted in red ocher and the vase after firing. The relatively fewer dipinti done in black gloss were painted before firing. Like graffiti, dipinti usually consist of a single letter or linked letters, numerical notations, and, less frequently, words, phrases, and sentences. Most are probably forms of trademarks; they are mostly found on vases intended for export.
