Paintings executed on an easel or other portable device, having either canvas or panel supports; generally restricted to those painted from the 16th century forward. The term implies not only physical aspects of creation, but also inherent concepts associated with the increased secular use of art from the 16th century and with the identification of paintings as objects of worth in their own right.
