Scope note
Small sculptures, usually of soapstone or steatite, of humans, animals, or monsters, generally three inches to six inches high, from Sierra Leone, Guinea, and Liberia, West Africa, and of unknown date, probably the 7th to the 14th century; may have been ancestor figures, but now used as spirit representations.
