Scope note
The variety of German language that developed after ca. 1100 CE, based on the upper German dialects Alemannic and Bavarian that had begun to arise in the southernmost part of Germany. Middle High German was the language of an extensive literature that includes the early 13th-century epic "Nibelungenlied."
