Scope note
Style of textile, particularly carpets, made in the city of Derbent, Dagestan, in southwestern Russia. Carpets are typically characterized by the use of fine-spun yarn and short pile, with the two wefts between each row of knots being barely visible on the back of the carpet. Many, often complementary, colors are used, with blue being the most common. Motifs are quasi-representational and of graduated sizes, and patterns are intricate.
