Scope note
Refers to the Japanese period begining with the Onin War (1467-1477) and ending with the capture of of Kyoto in 1568, although some scholars date the period from the early 1490s. The period saw the development of castle towns, which served as commercial and political centers, and the popularity of tea ceremonies, haiku, and classical Chinese ink painting and pottery.
