Scope note
Refers to paintings from Odisha (formerly called Orissa) in eastern India from the mid-16th century through the 19th century. The style includes miniature paintings, painted cloth hangings and palm-leaf manuscripts. The style is inspired by medieval art but also has Mughal, Deccani and Vijayanagara influences. The vigourous line, sumptuous color, and fine linear design that characterize Orissan miniature painting are unique in contemporary Indian painting. The cloth hangings are likewise eclectic in style and characteristically depict symbolic plans of sacral complexes in delicate earth tones.
