Scope note
Refers to a style that developed in the second half of the 16th century in Spain and its colonies, and lasted through the 17th century. The influence of the style can be seen in other visual arts, though it is primarily evident in architecture, and is named after the architect Juan de Herrera. The style is characterized by the abandonment of the exuberance and decorative detail of the Plateresque and succeeding Classicizing movements to favor instead a more majestic, austere style that reflected the melancholic and religiously intense tastes of Philip II, which are combined with elements of Italian Mannerism.
