- Refers to the Migration period style associated with the Avars, a group of undetermined origin and language who were important players in eastern Europe from the sixth century CE, and who established an empire between the Adriatic and Baltic Seas through the eighth century. The term refers particularly to the center of the Avar empire, which was in the Hungarian plain and reached its peak at the end of the sixth century.
