- General non-taxonomic and historical term referring to the virus thought to cause AIDS. Since 1991, HIV was no longer considered an official species name; instead, two species were designated HIV-1 and HIV-2. The geographical, biological, and chronological origins of the viruses have been debated since the discovery of AIDS as an emerging disease in 1981.
