- Process of engraving and printing from steel plates for the production of documents requiring long runs with precise replication, such as banknotes or postage stamps. It is mechanical a process developed by Jacob Perkins in the early 1800s, which enables the transfer of an impression from a steel plate to a steel cylinder in a rolling press. For the related printmaking process using steel or steel-faced copper plates, use "steel engraving."
