A solid-state welding process in which the parts are joined by the local application of high-frequency sound waves as they are held together under pressure. This process is used in many industrial applications to join dissimilar materials. It is also used in the conservation of parchment, the encapsulation of paper objects, and in joining woven and non-woven textiles.
