Recreational activity comprising traveling by skis in open country over rolling, hilly terrain as distinguished from traveling downhill on skis. The activity developed in Scandinavian countries as a means of travel as well as recreation. Cross-country skiing differs from downhill skiing in that the skis are longer, narrower, and lighter, the bindings allow movement between the heel of the skier's boot and the ski, and the ski poles are longer than those used in Alpine skiing.
