A toxic and reactive reddish gas, NO2, nitrogen dioxide is an atmospheric pollutant (as in photochemical smog) produced by combustion of fossil fuels. Exposure to nitrogen oxide can cause fading of dyes and organic colorants in paints, textiles, and photographs, as well as deterioration of calcareous stone.
