Scope note
Skin of a deer or other member of the cervid family, used especially for clothing, moccasins, and bookbinding leather. In early bookbinding, before the 16th century, the skin was either processed with lime or alum-tawed to make it white in appearance. For processed deerskin, use "buckskin" or "doeskin (skin)."
