- Coffins made of cast iron, particularly those that were manufactured in the early through mid-19th century in the United States, used to transport and preserve corpses. Usage declined after effective embalming became prevalent. The primary manufacturer was Almond Dunbar Fisk in Providence, Rhode Island.
