Scope note
Small plate or saucer-shaped item, often having or mounted on a handle and made of precious metal, used in Christian services during the distribution of the eucharist to prevent crumbs from the host from falling to the ground as the celebrant places the host in the mouth of the faithful. For the general term referring to any type of metal objects used for the liturgy, use "church plate."
