Scope note
Rectangular containers placed in public places and intended to contain a telephone. They were first introduced by police departments in urban areas in the late 1870s in the United States and Western Europe to allow patrol officers and citizens to alert the central command of disturbances. The term may be used to refer to roadside boxes installed on poles or walls and containing telephones to allow motorists with disabled vehicles to request assistance. In Britain, usage overlaps with "telephone booths."
