doornails
- Scope note
- Large-headed nails with which doors, window shutters, or other such wooden coverings are studded for strength, protection, or ornamentation. Such a nail was also sometimes placed under a door knocker, to receive the blow and make a sound. For ornamental nails used in large numbers and primarily for decoration, particularly in historical Spain and its colonies, use "chatônes."
