piscinae (Christian building fixtures)
- Scope note
- Stone basins with a drain, generally set near the sacristy, often in a niche. The piscina was used for the celebrant's ablutions and for washing the sacred vessels during the Mass. Piscinae drain into the ground, and some have a small upper shelf that serves as a credence. For pools in Roman or Medieval homes or public sites, use "piscinae (pools)."
