weigh-houses
- Scope note
- Buildings constructed or used to weigh goods as a public service, particularly those buildings constructed before 1800 in European cities prior to the establishment of international standards for weights. Weigh-houses were particularly common in Germany, the Netherlands, and Poland, where they were typically constructed near the town market square, town gate, or port. Authorities also used the facilities to levy taxes on goods transported through or sold within the city.
