Scope note
Designates structures in which charged particles, generally subatomic particles such as protons or electrons, are accelerated by means of an alternating electric field whose frequency is kept constant to remain synchronous with the particles. They are confined to a closed circular orbit by a changing magnetic field, the strength of which is increased to keep the path’s radius constant as the particles gain mass and their momentum increases.
