Scope note
The interior, enclosed parts of Greek or Greco-Roman temples, usually containing the cult statue of the god and encompassing any sub-chambers within the solid wall, such as the vestibule, sanctuary or central chamber, and treasury. The term was later adopted to mean any of various small interior rooms, such as cells in a convent.
