- Ancient mortars, usually of simple design, comprising bowls or basins used for pounding, grinding, or squeezing. Some Roman examples were made of stone having quartz grains are embedded in the internal surface, providing a rough surface for grinding. Some Middle Eastern examples were mold-made ceramic vessels.
