- Relatively small pencil-shaped instruments with a hard point, often metal or bone, used for marking, writing, or drawing. Among uses for styluses are for incising lines on a soft surface such as wax, for transferring drawings through tracing with pressure, with inked ribbon as a tracing-point in devices such as a seismograph or telegraph receiver, and as an indicator on touch-sensitive electronic devices.
