- Devices incorporated in special looms to control individual warp yarns via a system of punched cards. This invention, by Joseph Marie Jacquard, and first demonstrated in 1801, enabled looms to produce fabrics with complex patterns and images such as tapestry, brocade, damask, and matelasse.
