burst testers
- Scope note
- Mechanized devices used to measure the burst strength of, or force required to break or rupture, fabric materials. To measure a fabric's burst strength, these devices first utilize clamps to hold fabric samples in place. The devices then subject the samples to hydrostatic pressure via an elastic or rubber diaphragm, which automatically inflates and expands toward the sample thus applying increasing physical stress to the fabric until it ruptures. Typically, both sides of a fabric sample are measured using a burst tester; the results of both sides are averaged to calculate the fabric's overall burst strength.
