Scope note
Thimble-sized dies, caps, or plates equipped with myriad small holes through which a plastic melt base material or polymer spinning solution is forced, thus enabling the extrusion of long filaments for spinning into yarn and other man-made fibers. Akin to a shower head through which water is forced by pressure, these devices likewise utilize pressure to force the solution through its many circular or oval-shaped openings. Each hole on the die forms a single filament; the combined filaments produced by the totality of holes form filament yarn. Typically made of stainless steel or platinum, these devices can comprise myriad sizes and shapes depending upon the resulting filament's desired appearance and surface area. However, these devices are conventionally circular in shape and produce fibers that are round in cross section.
