Scope note
Mechanized devices, typically comprising a shearing unit made of steel blades spirally mounted on a roller and a flat ledger blade, designed to remove excess surface fibers from fabrics and trim raised naps to a uniform height. To facilitate the shearing process, the device's spiral rollers rotate against the flat ledger blade to selectively cut naps at various lengths, operating in a similar way to scissors. As the fabric moves through the device's blades, its surface becomes smooth and consistent as excess fibers are trimmed. In addition to enhancing the fabric's appearance, this device can also be used to create myriad effects in fabrics such as pile variation, texture contrast, pattern shearing, and improved print definition.
