akaris (lanterns)

- Illuminated sculptures, or lanterns, that are based on traditional Japanese lantern-making craft. Coined by Isamu Noguchi to describe the objects he designed and that are manufactured in Gifu, Japan, from paper made from mulberry tree bark; and that are considered to be a union of sculpture and functional object.
