Scope note
Devices for supporting a cross on the altar and by extension, any device for supporting or fixing a cross at or near the altar. As early as the 5th and 6th centuries there is evidence in Byzantine art of partly combined candlesticks and cross, which are the precursors to cross feet as the form developed in the later Middle Ages. There are four main groups of cross feet placed on the altar: four-sided, three-sided, circular, and architectural.
