- Japanese ritual dolls made of clay or porcelain and dressed in real clothes that are used at the girls' festival, Hina Matsuri, held annually in March. A number or dolls representing the emperor, empress, and their court are displayed on a stepped altar. Girls of ages 7 to 17 visit each other's collections and refreshments are offered to their majesties, then to the guests, in a ritual more than 900 years old.
